Alla Prima II

Alla Prima II
Everything I know About Painting - and More

Alla Prima II is the expanded version of Richard Schmid's original Alla Prima, which is considered one of the most comprehensive art instruction books on the market and the standard in classical art education both in the United States and abroad. While all the information in the original edition has been retained, Richard revisited it for greater clarity, adding even more information on painting and the insights he acquired since it's release fifteen years ago. With 328 pages and 262 images of paintings, step-by-step sequences, and diagrams, this is a truly remarkable book and an essential for painters seeking serious instruction in representational painting.

RE-BUILDING "ALL PRIMA"

It was a great honor to assist Richard with the expansion of this legendary book. Over the course of two years, I helped with the pre-press operations including the layout and preparation of the images. Here we are at the command station where we made all of the edits and additions.

When press day finally arrived it was an incredible treat to witness all of our hard work materialize into a physical book. Shown here are a few images from the week on the press at Puritan Capital in Hollis, New Hampshire.

"Somewhere within all of us there is a wordless center, a part of us that hopes to be immortal in some way, a part that has remained unchanged since we were children. It is the source of our strength and compassion. That faint confluence of the tangible and the spiritual is where Art comes from. It has no known limits, and once you tap into it you will realize what truly rich choices you have. May each painting you do from that sacred place include an expression of gratitude for the extraordinary privilege of being an artist."
